Ready to earn a paycheck and a new career at the same time? The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) makes it easy to level up your skills—with paid, hands-on training and no experience required.

KDOT’s Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee is your ticket to a steady, well-paying career that starts fast. You’ll:

  • Get paid $19.65/hour from day one

  • Train for your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)—for free

  • Learn real skills while working on real projects

  • Move up quickly (many reach senior roles in just a few years!)

You’ll start as a trainee, earn your CDL within 90 days, and jump to Highway Maintenance Worker status—with a raise. Keep climbing to senior and even supervisory positions, all with the stability and benefits that come with a state job.

Want to stay in the construction world without the heavy lifting? Check out KDOT’s Engineering Technician Associate roles—you’ll earn your CDL and get certified as a construction inspector.

Work full-time, weekdays only, except in the case of emergency situations when weekends or holidays may be necessary. It's a solid path to a reliable career doing work that matters across Kansas. The Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee program typically takes 3-5 years total, similar to an apprenticeship.

If you’re 18 or older with a valid driver’s license, you’re already qualified to apply. Want a head start? Contact your Navigator for an introduction to the KDOT team—they’ll help you make connections and navigate the application with confidence.
