If you’re ready to step into a tech career—without waiting for a traditional degree—the Apprenti apprenticeship program through the KC Tech Council (KCTC) is one of the most powerful ways to get started. With real training, paid work experience, and strong job-placement outcomes, Apprenti is designed to help you earn while you learn and move directly into in-demand roles.

What is KC Tech Council? KCTC is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to making Kansas City a thriving tech hub. They work with employers, educators, and community partners to grow talent pipelines and create opportunities for people who are eager to start careers in information technology and related fields.

What makes Apprenti different? Apprenti is a registered apprenticeship program that removes many of the barriers people face when trying to break into tech. You don’t need a four-year degree or years of experience—just a high school diploma, determination, and the willingness to learn.

Here’s how it works:

  • Apply and test: Complete a short application and assessment on the Apprenti website during the open application window, which begins on December 1 and June 1. From there, you're in a pool of candidates available to match with an apprenticeship. So mark your calendars now!

  • Interview & Match with Opportunities: When apprenticeship opportunities with a participating hiring partner are available, candidates will be invited to interview with Apprenti staff. Candidates interview with Apprenti and, if selected, move on to employer interviews. Acceptance into the Apprenti program is contingent on being interviewed, selected, and hired by the hiring company.

  • Train and prepare: Spend 2–5 months in technical training tailored to your apprenticeship track.

  • Earn while you learn: Begin a paid, one-year apprenticeship with a local employer, where your wages increase as your skills grow.

  • Step into a career: More than 80% of participants transition into full-time roles after completing the program.

Alongside its apprenticeship programs, the KC Tech Council is also leading KC TechBridge, an initiative focused on strengthening the region’s tech workforce. KC TechBridge works to connect more people with tech careers in the greater Kansas City area by building a stronger, more responsive talent pipeline.

As part of this effort, KCTC is gathering real experiences from individuals who have searched for tech jobs in Kansas City. These insights will help shape future opportunities and ensure that training programs and employers are better aligned with the needs of job seekers. Why IT and tech-adjacent careers? The demand for tech workers in Kansas and across the Midwest continues to grow, with jobs offering competitive pay, stability, and career advancement. IT and related fields also value diverse perspectives—making them a great fit for people from all backgrounds, including veterans, women, and career changers.
